Congratulations to V6B Senior Designer Igor Selskiy, who recently received Gold in the Contemporary category at the 2012 Elite Design Awards for the condo transformation below.
The project is a conversion of a traditional small space condo kitchen to a contemporary open, multifunctional, living space. Here, the client wanted the kitchen area opened up so he could see into his living space and out to the 300 degree view up the valley in New Westminster, BC. A sizeable concrete pillar in the middle of the space posed a particular challenge for the scheme.
By incorporating a drop ceiling we were able to accomplish two things:
1.We could house mechanical and electrical rough ins, freeing up any vertical space, maximizing the open concept;
2. The transition from a lower intimate kitchen space, into the higher ceiling living room area, accomplishes the effect of opening up views through the whole condo space to the outdoors.
We also removed the drywall and cabinetry from around the post and re-cladded the concrete with an architectural stone. The warm and tactile texture allowed the post to became a design feature. The ceiling was reworked to be a curved design element with the bar/entertainment space below reflecting this curve, anchored by the architectural post.
Through the careful arrangement of these volumes of space, all the client’s requirements were met. The cabinetry could stand on its own featuring warm contemporary tones and lines. The Quartz counter tops, stainless appliances, and hardwood floor throughout provided a perfect living environment, for the clients home.
